For the past nine years the network has
coordinated a Sharing Student Work conference,
which serves as an opportunity for students to share the
progress they have made on their Senior Year Projects with their
peers and with interested adults.
Each year a directory is created and disseminated
to serve as a resource to all member
schools. The directory includes a list of the member schools
and a brief description of their program. The principal and
contact individuals are provided to facilitate communication
within the Network.
WHAT
DO MEMBER SCHOOLS DO?
Through
participation in the Network, member schools are able to learn
about innovative approaches to improving the senior year
experience and also share implementation strategies as their
programs develop. We believe that the Senior Year Network can
provide a web of support that would otherwise not be available
to the individual schools.
HOW MANY NASSAU
COUNTY HIGH SCHOOLS ARE INVOLVED?
The
Senior Year Network Principles
1. The
senior year should be a qualitatively different experience that
enables seniors to become intensely involved in an area of
interest giving them greater control over their own learning and
opportunities to reflect upon the meaning of their education.
2.
The senior year should provide all seniors with
the capacity to further utilize their skills and to further
develop independent learning techniques while developing
self-reliance and confidence.
3. The
senior year should contain experiences to address transition
issues that seniors are facing and to ease the transition from
high school to the world of work and college.
4. The
senior year should be a time in which all seniors go beyond
conventional learning by becoming involved in a research project,
internship or service learning experience.
5. The
senior year should provide extensive opportunities for all
seniors to go beyond the school and to find access to resources
throughout the community.
6.
The senior year should enable all seniors to
develop relationships with teachers and other adults that
encourage cooperative research and the exchange of ideas.
7. The
senior year should include a culminating activity in which all
participating seniors give an exhibition of their work
demonstrating their competency and communicating to their
teachers and peers the quality and depth of their efforts.
